Inside a sound-proof booth and wearing a headset and a microphone, the interpreter simultaneously (or rather, with a few seconds’ time lapse) translates what is being said in the plenary session, sending an audio signal to the audience wearing headsets. Depending on the duration and technical content of the event, a booth will host two or three interpreters who will alternate, since listening, analysing, identifying logical relationships between sentences and speaking all the while requires a great cognitive load.
The interpreter listens to what the speaker says, analyses the message, memorizes it in their short-term memory, and quickly jots down some key words on a pad. A few seconds after the speaker has finished, the interpreter will translate to the audience. This mode doubles the time agenda of the event and is only advisable when there is just one speaker talking in a foreign language for a short period of time.
This is a simultaneous interpretation, but without any technical equipment (i.e. booth, headsets, microphone or similar tools), whispered to a maximum of two people by an interpreter standing very close to them.
Again, this is a simultaneous interpretation, this time using the so called bidule or small interpretation kit with mobile headsets and receivers. It’s the technique to be preferred for company visits or business meetings.
Careful and accurate assessment of the text to be translated or the documentation that the speaker has given me to interpret during the event. The purpose is to catch the general meaning and start adopting that specific mindset.
I then study texts, create a glossary and memorize the terminology, grasping the key concepts of the subjects following in-depth research in authoritative sectorial sources.
Drafting the translation and interpreting according to the timing and terms agreed with the customer.
