INTERPRETATION

According to the customer’s needs and type of event, I can work using the following techniques: simultaneous, chuchotage/whispered, consecutive and liaison. I can work in the usual interpreting booth onsite or even using ad hoc software platforms for remote interpreting. One of these is KUDO, which qualified me as a KUDO Certified Interpreter after following The Interpreter Journey course.

SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETATION

Inside a sound-proof booth and wearing a headset and a microphone, the interpreter simultaneously (or rather, with a few seconds’ time lapse) translates what is being said in the plenary session, sending an audio signal to the audience wearing headsets. Depending on the duration and technical content of the event, a booth will host two or three interpreters who will alternate, since listening, analysing, identifying logical relationships between sentences and speaking all the while requires a great cognitive load.

CONSECUTIVE INTERPRETATION

The interpreter listens to what the speaker says, analyses the message, memorizes it in their short-term memory, and quickly jots down some key words on a pad. A few seconds after the speaker has finished, the interpreter will translate to the audience. This mode doubles the time agenda of the event and is only advisable when there is just one speaker talking in a foreign language for a short period of time.

CHUCHOTAGE/WHISPERED INTEPRETATION

This is a simultaneous interpretation, but without any technical equipment (i.e. booth, headsets, microphone or similar tools), whispered to a maximum of two people by an interpreter standing very close to them.

LIAISON INTERPRETATION (SMALL BUSINESS MEETINGS OR VISITS)

Again, this is a simultaneous interpretation, this time using the so called bidule or small interpretation kit with mobile headsets and receivers. It’s the technique to be preferred for company visits or business meetings.

WORKFLOW

During my work experience in interpretation or translation assignments, I’ve developed a method which develops in different steps. Confidentiality and the customer’s data protection are inherent in each step.

ANALYSIS

Careful and accurate assessment of the text to be translated or the documentation that the speaker has given me to interpret during the event. The purpose is to catch the general meaning and start adopting that specific mindset.

STUDY

I then study texts, create a glossary and memorize the terminology, grasping the key concepts of the subjects following in-depth research in authoritative sectorial sources.

PERFORMANCE

Drafting the translation and interpreting according to the timing and terms agreed with the customer.

CONVERSATION COURSES

Together, we will build a pathway that will lead you to talk with more confidence, setting aside useless embarrassment and talking freely about the most useful or congenial topics. Thanks to the experience I have acquired in so many different market sectors, I can create a conversation course which will allow you to bring back to life your ability to speak or maintain what you already know: delivering a company presentation, telling a personal story or intervening during a conversation among friends. With the right vocabulary and with no stress. The course can be delivered in a face-to-face mode or remotely, using the available technological means such as, for example, Cisco Webex, Microsoft Teams, Zoom or Skype.
